Virgin by Joan Kivanda

An engaging and important production for all adolescents. this play explores choice, identity and the struggles of growing up.

" The hallways were abuzz with discussion about the play at lunchtime… Almost all the students understood and appreciated the overall message, and really enjoyed the acting "
~ Teacher, Monarch Park High School

The Story:
The story of Janet, a young women who, like others, tries to find her place through adolescence. Originally from Tanzania, Janet struggles with the pressures and uncertainties around her, clings to the memories from her childhood home, and battles with herself as she maneuvers through sexual awakening. With questions about sexuality, identity, growing up, responsibility, she looks internally to find her own truth and strength. Virgin offers young people a story of their own… one which poignantly reveals their fears, questions and challenges.

Themes:
Identity, self-acceptance, peer pressure, sexuality, cultural identity, responsibility, and family

Appropriate for:
Grades 7-12. Family Studies, Womens' Studies, Drama, English

Support Programming:
The production of Virgin offers students and teachers a unique "starting point" for exploring the process of sexual choices and the pressures around those choices. To support and encourage that dialogue we provide:

  • Resource Guides - with pre and post performance activities
  • In-Class workshops - both before and after the performance (facilitated by peer counsellors and/or b current artists) which introduce students to the themes of the play and provide creative and dynamic tools for exploration.
  • Artists in the classroom - within a week of your class attending the play, company members will visit your classroom and discuss the show experience with your class, answer students' questions and get feedback
  • Post performance talk backs with the cast and crew members

" If they had seen the play when they were younger it would have made them think more about their sexual activity "
~ Grade 11/12 Students
