b current launched in 1991 with the world’s first mounting of a dub theatre script:
dark diaspora … in dub
Created by legendary poet/theatre artist, ahdri zhina mandiela.
We are bringing it back 25 years later! In 2016… we experience:
With our Founder & Artistic Director emeritus, ahdri zhina mandiela, and photography artist Michael Chambers as the main visionaries, this reimagined parading event will be accompanied by a visual installation within the diaspora Dub event.
It is a jump off point for unearthing Black ideas and ideals which are not often brought to light in the dialectics of art that impacts and endures. This re-visioning is a retrospective celebration of Black Art, History, and Politics, combining visual art, public intervention/performance, dub poetry, and masqueraders; featuring over 50 poets, actors, designers, directors, and visual artists from the Black diaspora, all within an immersive audience experience.
Developed in both Canada and the Caribbean, the diaspora Dub event will take place throughout Toronto with a series of presentations in Fall 2016.
